How To Avoid Stretch Marks During 3 Critical Life Stages

One reason why unsightly stretch marks appear is because of hormonal changes. Adolescents grow quickly, and this causes skin to stretch over its limit and tear over time. Similarly, this is what happens when the belly quickly expands during pregnancy and when muscles grow really fast when weight lifting.

If you’re in your teens, it’s best to take preliminary action. The best time to take care of your skin is not in your 40s but as soon as possible! You’d most probably agree that one of the toughest times is during the teen years. This is when we are most self-conscious. Puberty can cause stretch marks because of how fast the body grows and how slow the skin may react to this fast growth. For instance, some girls develop stretch marks on their hips because they grow really fast during puberty. To avoid stretch marks during puberty, engage in a sport you like, such as volleyball or soccer. Drink lots of water and choose healthy drinks like fresh juices over sodas. This will keep your skin firm, flexible and healthy.

Another time you should try to avoid stretch marks is during pregnancy. If you’re planning to have a child, start moisturizing your belly now. Use a natural cream that is both safe and effective. Good creams contain natural ingredients like grape seed, Aloe Vera and vitamin E. Note that other areas may also develop stretch marks during pregnancy, such as the buttocks, breasts, upper thighs and arms. So concentrate on moisturizing those.

If you are planning to do some weight lifting, start treating your skin now as well. Treat areas that will be prone to stretch marks due to muscle gain, such as the arms, legs and neck area (men tend to have stretch marks on their neck and arms). You may apply creams but it is also best to simply work out gradually. Don’t aim at gaining a certain amount of muscle in a very short period of time.
